Practice As Composition

An MDX essay about practice as a creative structure rather than a mechanical routine.

Practice has form. It has pacing, contrast, repetition, return, and development. In that sense, practice is already close to composition.

When a musician designs a practice session, they are arranging attention over time. The order of tasks matters. The length of each attempt matters. The silence between attempts matters too.

The more intentionally we shape practice, the more likely it is that effort becomes musical understanding rather than only fatigue.
